Wigton is a market community in Cumbria, England. Historically in Cumberland, it lies just outside the Lake District in the borough of Allerdale. Wigton goes to the centre of the Solway Plain, between the Caldbeck Fells and the Solway shore. It is offered by Wigton train station on the Cumbrian Coast Line, and also the A596 road to Workington. The town of Silloth-on-Solway lies twelve miles to the west, beyond Abbeytown. Wigton today is a thriving market town, with livestock public auctions being held on a regular basis at Hopes Auction Company. The major company is Innovia Films. The community has its very own senior high school, called The Nelson Thomlinson College, which is a well-performing extensive with close links to the Innovia manufacturing facility. In 2004 the town was the first negotiation in the UK to implement a time limit on teenagers under the age of 16. It remained in place for two weeks, as well as its aim was to reduce the amount of vandalism in the town centre. It followed nightly criminal damage campaigns, which included wrecked shop fronts, as well as scare tactics of senior members of the neighborhood. The curfew attracted national interest, with the local high school obtaining visits from companies such as Sky News. It had some effect, with much less criminal damage happening ever since.
