It’s separated from North Bexleyheath by the A220 Erith Road. The town was established after the sale of land in 1881 to build the Bexleyheath loop line between Lewisham and Dartford. Its name stems from the name of the railway station, which was named after Colonel Barne, who owned a nearby house and was vice-chairman of the railway company. Nowadays, the railway station runs trains between London Charing Cross, London Victoria or London Cannon Street, via Lewisham and Eltham towards the west and Dartford railway station to the east.
